- To All Alt.Winsock Readers:
-
- Here is an idea for all you programmers out there. Would it be possible
- to write a program to send FAXes over Internet? The imagined software
- might have a client & server (daemon) parts. It could be similar to a TALK or
- Lineprinter client/server combo. The server might be running full-time as
- a listener for incoming FAXes. A client component should be able to send
- a FAX in one of the standard formats to the server IP address. The server may
- either alert the user or pop-up with a viewer when a new FAX is received.
- Ideally if the client could operate as a printer driver (like the commercial
- WinFAX), then any computer document could be sent as a FAX (at least
- through Windows). A dream feature might be the ability to even send "colour
- FAXes" through one of the common graphic formats like GiF or JPEG (of
- course the software would have to be able to autodetect the format).
- Eventually it would also be nice if the client software could actually interface
- with hand and desktop scanners. And run under Winsocks 1.1 of course.
-
- I realize there are commercial services on Internet that will receive a
- document and FAX it out for you. What I am thinking of will allow direct
- FAXing to anyone on Internet (FAXing to the "Internet-deprived" is another
- matter). Lets cut out the middle-man (phone companies etc). I would expect
- there would be a very good market for any TCP/IP FAX software priced in the
- "share-ware" range. I would like to do it myself but I am not a programmer.
-
- Just an idea for anyone looking to take on a new project. Remember me if
- you need beta-testers. Cheers from Canada!

- The Mac Eudora takes advantage of Mac-specific features to provide
- a dialup-interactive mode of connecting if you don't have a SLIP connection.
- The PC/Windows version doesn't have those features available, and so
- requires TCP/IP.
-
- NUPop in its latest release has a number of net-access features in it,
- everything from telnet to gopher to news to, of course, the mail interface
- it started with. It's a DOS program that'll run under Windows as well,
- and it has both TCP/IP (built-in stack) and dialup-interactive connections
- available. Not all of the features will work well, reliably, or at all
- over a plain old serial dialup-interactive line, but some will. If
- SLIP access isn't in the cards for you, it's worth a look. Lurk at
- info.nupop, or take a look on ftp.acns.nwu.edu for the latest kit.

- What's important in making "address" work right is ensuring that the
- "input" statement that comes before it describes the text that comes
- immediately before the start of the IP address; only spaces are ignored.
- If you haven't already, check your script against a trace of the output

- This is no longer true. Eudora 2.0.1 has been released and includes
- direct serial port support -- i.e a serial POP3 connection akin to

- Recent versions of Trumpet Winsock enable you to configure the ip address
- from within a login script after dialing up, like you suggested your friend
